“informations of death” was the astonishing debut single by neon, legendary italian new wave band, formed in florence in 1979 and led by marcello michelotti (the only permanent member). were part of the florence dark wave/electronic scene of the 1980s, together with pankow, diaframma, early litfiba.

benedikt frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the esp institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view—a whole greater than the sum of its parts. his playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the esp institute, the lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we’re already impatiently fiending for more. on side a, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. on side b, cupids delight (ft tcb) and gravel both explore variations on beauty—the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. welcome home brother benedikt, what took you so long?

ultimate care ii is the new album from renowned conceptual electronics duo matmos (drew daniel and m.c. schmidt). recorded in the basement studio of their home in baltimore, the album is constructed entirely out of the sounds generated by a whirlpool ultimate care ii model washing machine. like its namesake, the album runs across its variations as a single, continuous thirty eight minute experience that starts with the grinding turn of the wash size selection wheel, and ends with the alert noise that signals that the wash is done.

the a side * sense of doubt* is a bit more stripped down and melodic, as the b side and also the title track of this release * subterraneans* is more of a jazzy house groove, that simply doesn’t stop rolling and keeps the tension with subtle variations and other nice little gimmicks. as always we truly hope that you enjoy these tracks as much as we do and we are happy to have daniel back on board as for sure he can be called one of germanys top notch producers.

title track joyride kicks things off with a straight up 909 beat, complete with scifi sweeps and classic wood block percussion, quickly working its way into an very subtle groove with every element working effectively to keep it fully funk laden. sideways completes the a side of the release and gets going right from the beginning. pumping percussion takes hold and hits the ground running before a perfectly weighted synth hook lashes over the top with henning playing with the synths lfo to creative effect. dust takes things down a notch as swirling pads drape themselves over a serious 909 beat. henning lets this one loop out, letting the subtle variations in the synths do the work as the 909 holds the beat solid and reminiscent of early berlin/detroit dub techno crossovers. mars attacks closes of the ep and does so in particularly fine fashion. a more broken beat affair this time from henning and he really works his machines into a sonic warfare of bass tones and tweaked out synths that sear through the crashing percussion workout.

prolific seattle producer jon mcmillion returns to nuearth kitchen with another crucial chapter in his epic tale of haunted house-music subversions. this ep offers four variations on a bizarre and engrossing theme incl. remixes by fred p and orson wells.

following eomac’s debut album “spectre” on killekill, released earlier this year, here come remixes of the three most outstanding track sof the album. tommy four seven picked the title track spectre, taking away some of the dense texture of the original, speeding it up a bit and adding some straight-forward percussion to turn the original into a big anthem for the mellow moments on the dancefloor. lars stöwe aka anstam is using his anno stamm-alias to rip the distorted bassline of the grimey su riddim out and add some playful bassline variations and some serious 808 business to it to turn it into a peaktime banger with lots of chicago flavour. and do what they do best and turn shell of dark into a half-tempo stomper that after a while breaks up to a devastating weapon of distorted drums and melodies.

sandwell districts rrose launches a new label with a follow up to >motormouth variations<, last years unlikely collaboration with legendary improviser and synthesizer pioneer bob ostertag (named one of 2011s top 50 albums by the wire magazine).
for the debut release on eaux, rrose searched through ostertags cassette archives to discover a lost gem of studio improvisation from 1977. >the surgeon general< sees the barely post-teen bob ostertag exploring feedback techniques with an early buchla modular synthesizer, tape delay, flute and violin. the results are uncharacteristically moody, spacious, and well ahead of their time. on the flip, rrose provides two new revisions. >no child left behind< is a noisy and hypnotic acid-laden beast designed for dancefloor damage, while >her insides laid bare< takes the original into murky subaquatic territory. look for much more to come from rrose and eaux in the coming months.

with *closer* masterton debuts on blackfoxmusics 19th release (bfm019). *closer* is a warm track with a deep groove and beautiful melodies. it relates to living in a long distance relationship and overcoming a lack of proximity.
robert babicz (babiczstyle, systematic, bedrock records) created an incredible remix. he used lots of the original melodies, combined them with new elements, added rolling drums and a thick bassline to give the track the extra drive. his remix became a constant part of his live sets and was debuted with great response at grelle forelle (vienna) and ritter butzke (berlin).
channel x (stil vor talent) remixed *closer* into a pretty cool and clubby deep house track. you can feel their berlin origin when listening to the groovy bassline with variations of the melody. finally the breaks capture the mood of the dissonant sounds from the original track.

it is something of tradition for tosca to get their albums remixed. indeed, they once released a record comprised entirely of 13 mixes ofone song, 2002s *different tastes of honey*, variations on *honey* from 1999s *suzuki*. it is a way of keeping things fresh, injecting someuncertainty into proceedings, knocking things out of balance in order to check how they should be re-aligned. after releasing *odeon* earlier this year, tosca comes back with *tlapa - the odeon remixes*. *tlapa* meaning, this life arouses pure adventure. the remixes come from bredon moeller, joyce muniz, siler city, ltj experience, beat pharmacy, marlow & truby, sephane lefrancois, afg aka antye greie and rodney hunter. the double vinyl comes with a cd-copy included.

the release kicks off with title track find my way which features exciting young vocalist, ria morans heartfelt tones. cade opts for swinging 909 drums and a hooky bass-lick as the driving force, while morans voice sporadically eases in and out of the groove and understated chord stabs and tension building strings fuel the musicality, resulting in a classy, deep-house workout. up next is dr. fox, embracing a similar deep, contemporary house aesthetic, with saw-wave bass hits, cosseting pads and hooky vocal snippets acting as the fundamental elements of the cut, cade then plays on subtle variations in the groove throughout its near seven minute duration, to maintain an evolving dynamism and enticement. entering the latter half of the single we have ghostryder up first, cade opts for a more upfront approach this time, bringing busy drum programming to the forefront, alongside sweeping synth tones, a tom-driven bass line and dubbed out vocal licks.

the first release on project squared in a year, *make your mess* is a three track ep by melbournes craig mcwhinney. craig has been making music for years and releasing since the late 2000s on melbourne labels such as pinksilver, melbourne deepcast and his own haul music, also on labels based further afield such as brendon moellers steadfast and speedy js electric deluxe. craigs music is techno, but it isnt preoccupied with the 4/4, employing broken, swung and rolling drum patterns. his tracks often include melodic and harmonic elements and effects reminiscent of dub techno but without conforming to the pastiche template of the sub-genre. the make your mess ep is composed of the core title track and two additional tracks that arose as interpretations and variations on the initial production: *provocation is an excuse* is more furious and loud, *disengage* is more restrained. all three are around 125 bpm and were produced in the space of a month between september and october 2012.

saveds second release for 2013 comes from label debutant julien chaptal who presents the 2 track *illin ep*.
fist up on the a side is *eat ya foe*, a track which is built on unique percussion that possesses a warm bit crush effect. these foundations support the bouncing bassline which has an acid feel to it that works well against the potent vocals.
further damage is caused on the flip with *illin* where the rolling drums build nicely into the engaging lead line that advances through the track with filters and variations.

sare havlicek is back on nang following the release of his second full-length album <escape machine< back in june. this time it is a lean selection of variations and edits of the his track >diamondback<, a 2-part nu-disco opus laden with real strings and serious groove. parts 1 & 2 were included on >escape machine<, this ep sets out to expand on these ideas and unravel the mystery of parts 3, 4 & 5.

foam fangs could be a term used to describe silks preferred take on that too-easily dismissed 70s dancefloor dementia of disco – the soft bite, love nibble, mirrorball on steady/ready perma-revolve. jesse reiner (jonas reinhardts first mister, alongside past/part-time collaborators like phil manley of trans am and damon palermo of mi ami/magic touch), who never quite had the kranky krinkle of his ohm-ambient labelmates, travels head-on, tomorrowland-style, through long-form cosmic moroder constellations of >foam fangs<. nothing frothy about it, though there is a bit of the rubbery in reiner’s bounce-about, cool, funky kraut-disco. suddenly we are beaming back to a time when the world looked forward, envisioning a 21st century decked with silver, chrome, and neoprene. it is a sonic space both transparent and shiny, the metallic ding and cold ribbon of data, scrolling through infinite space. the opener, >foam fangs<, transports us instantly into an ever-expanding universe of sound and light at once fanning out and folding in on itself. variations on that theme continue as the jonas journey oscillates through the beat-beyond.

we are very exited to present two tracks that our danish resident artist mathias mesteno has send us. mathias has been part of the upon you family since day one. he occaisionally also released his classic and still very individual formed house tracks on freerange and tic tac toe records. if you count his collaboration with our uy boss marco resmann, then here comes his fifth release on upon you! the boulevard confessions ep comprehends two tracks. on a1 he is cooking in kekes kitchen an outrageous whorled open air slammer, which cant wait to be initiated on the beaches around the world. the b side- the concrete boheme seems more calm but finds its use and purpose as a deep-house track in the forests of modern styles. like always mathias suddenly rolls up the beat and is sure to surprise the consumer with unlikely rhythm variations. uy 062 in the house!

it has been half a year since we released the last max cooper ep on traum, so his new finished ep comes in handy for all of his fans and people interested in the grey zone of techno vs. electronica. max coopers new release the >egomodal ep< comes as a 4 tracks ep and adds up to a great piece of music. once again it focuses on dynamics and tangents, along with the concept of complexity and simplicity. the >egomodal ep< stays true to max coopers approach to link a mathematical structure with a simple one. we are happy to say he has succeeded to fuse complexity with variations by still finding time to focus on details and keeping up that nice randomness which makes his music so appealing also for clubbers and djs.
